What is the best advice your parents ever gave you?
Lorraine: Never go to bed angry.
Marcella: Walk with your shoulders back, keep your head up
and walk straight.
Arlie: Honest and integrity
Joyce: Give up those cigarettes. Cook pork till it’s done.
Never open the door to strangers. Don’t go to work at the paper mill.
Dale: Look it up yourself.
Jimmy: They told me to save my money. Said they would match
me dollar for dollar for a good car. I
paid $50 for the first one and loved that piece of junk. But they about shit!
Sue S: I hear my father’s voice in my head to this day with
“when in doubt, read the directions.” I do not follow instructions. I look at
the pictures to figure things out. I have screwed up a lot of things doing it
my way.
Lill: We’ve got more time than money. Which I think means
it is important to enjoy and appreciate what you have with family and friends
regardless of economics.
Marlee: My dad didn’t believe in credit; he paid cash and
wheeled and dealed for a lower price on everything. He never actually gave me
money advice but I followed his example.
Cindy: My dad always said: If you are going to do
something, always do it right. When I am doing a big job that I don’t want to
do I remind myself of this. My mom has given me so much great advice that I can’t
even begin to write it all down. As a kid, she helped me with so much. Her
advice always made me feel better. When I had my babies she gave me advice that
I am now passing down to my nieces. Don’t ever lay a baby down with a bottle.
You ALWAYS have time to hold him. Dress the baby during the day so when you put
him in pajamas at night, he knows it’s bedtime. Don’t ever give your baby a
pacifier. (yeah, right!)
Bill: Toughen up and learn to defend yourself.
Mary: Don’t stare directly at the sun and don’t eat yellow
snow.
What famous person from your era did you most
admire?
Lorraine: Lindbergh
John & Marcella: Will Rogers
Arlie: John Wayne
Denny: Dwight Eisenhower became president after serving as a
5-star general during the second war. John Wayne was the box office idol and on
Saturday you could go to view Rory Calhoun and his horse, Blackjack, win the west.
James Arness played in The Thing at the downtown theater and scared the crap
out of just about every little kid in Port Townsend who attended.
Joyce: Author Alex Haley, Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg,
Martin Luther King, and Bill Gates.
Dale: Mahatma Ghandi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Jimmy: Peter Fonda from Easy Rider
Sue S: Eleanor Roosevelt. She was a strong role model for
women. She wasn’t afraid to stand up for what was right. I also thought of
Billy Graham. It seems like he stayed true to his beliefs and wasn’t tainted
with scandals.
Lill: Jackie and John Kennedy, Gloria Steinem, Barbra Streisand.
Cindy: Can’t think of anyone from the past but I’m admiring
Laura Bush these days.
Bill: I loved Lucille Ball. Her sense of humor and outlook
were always optimistic.
Sue W: No one has come up with a cure for cancer,
Alzheimers or hemorrhoids. My favorite movie star is a tie with Sean Connery
and Jimmy Stewart. Also like Shirley Temple.
Mary: Bill Gates for his capitalistic abilities, Oprah
Winfrey for soul searching, James Baker during his time as Secretary of State.
