I drove into Port Townsend yesterday as I had half a dozen quick stops to make. Joyce Lee and I got an early start as I've found my energy level ebbs quickly the longer I get into my day. Never used to be that way! Anyhow, we left around 9:15 and stopped at Discovery Bay to visit Lauretta Thorne as she had some old photos I wanted to take pictures of.
Joyce and Lauretta
Was interesting driving up the steep narrow road to her house. It's the same place she grew up in and while the trees have grown, the view is still pretty spectacular. It's right behind the Disco Bay Grocery Store which her dad used to own. Now when I come down Eaglemount and stop at the stop sign by Fat Smitty's before pulling out onto the highway on my way home, I can look up through the trees and see Lauretta's big old gray house. Think I always saw it yet never saw it, if you know what I mean. It's an old house with lots of character. Really cozy. Here's some of her pictures that I took pictures of......
I forgot to ask her what this picture was but she played piano for all kinds of events so it could have been just about anything. Bob Balcom, choir director on the right. These ladies all look familiar but some I can't quite put a name to. Judy Gillett is in the back on left. Sitting at piano is Diana Harms and Lauretta.
This was a 1951 freshman initiation ceremony in front of Baker's Drugs on the corner of Taylor and Water in downtown PT. The two teenager guys on the left kind of look like a Gilbert and Bob Hansen.
I took this one of the band getting ready for the Rhody parade mainly because of the cars.
This was a 1954 queens court pic but it didn't reproduce that well with my cellphone camera. Interesting how the number of girls running for queen these past years seems to be shrinking more and more. I think there were only three this year.
Newspaper article from 1957 showing seniors putting their cards in a time capsule at the campus on the last day of school.
From there, we drove to Joanne Gilles' house. I hadn't been there in several years so I had to drive around a few blocks until I became familiar with the new looking landscape. Joanne has become an expert seamstress since our days of working together at the mill. Her quilt pieces are works of art. I took a picture of her refrigerator magnets.
She had a large supply of beads that her mother used to own and offered to give them to my granddaughter, Catie, who is into beading. She's going to be so thrilled to see just how many there are. This is just a portion. THANKS JOANNA ROSANNA DANNA! Catie sometimes pays for a booth at craft fairs. If you want to see some of the stuff she's selling, go to her Etsy page and search for WEINRIDGE JEWELRY
Before driving to Joanne's we did make three quick stops to drop off fudge I had made. A necessary delivery so I wouldn't be tempted to eat the whole pan myself! Saw my brother, Dana and his wife, Lill; Linda Pedersen, and Barbara Shaw. After Joanne's we headed down to my sister's place as she had some material, thread, and other sewing notions to give me. Was quite a nice haul for a days' drive.
Joyce and I headed back out of town and stopped at the casino for lunch. Neither of us were rolling in dough that day so we decided to split an order of fish and chips. We played the slots for probably less than an hour (she broke even; I lost) and then we drove home. She had to go out again to make a Safeway run but I was exhausted (hadn't slept that well the night before) so I got home, downloaded my photos, posted on Facebook, and crashed in my recliner. II didn't get much else accomplished for the rest of the day. I'm finding those PT runs wear me down quicker than they used to.
I was told my cortisone shot wasn't going to make my knee feel better forever but I was kind of hoping that it would last longer than it did. I'm not suffering like I was but I can feel tenderness and pain trying to return. I hope it's just morning stiffness as it hasn't even been a week yet!
On the way to my sister's place, I had to go by my old Kuhn Street house to take pictures (again!) Just can't get over how time and age can so quickly alter a place. Course you see that everywhere. See it in people too. I've been trying to settle on the design or picture I want for the cover of my book (This Side of the Road). Been thinking I might want to use 19th Street or Kuhn St. Still thinking on it. Here's some possibilities.
I'm kind of leaning towards this one --shows the road I traveled up and down on the way to school and where I rode my bike.
I also got a few shots of the barn that I liked....
I know. Enough already! Ha!
I plan on working on my book pretty much all week long. It's progressing but the editing doesn't seem to ever get finished. I've had to delete several paragraphs here and there. Still have to get busy on inserting photos too. I'm hoping to get some memories from people that I sent out regarding certain topics I thought I could build a chapter or two on -- one about Burdette Redding and his career in town as THE photographer and yesterday I asked on Facebook -- Did you grow up in the same house your mother or dad did? And -- Did you ever find a real treasure at a yard sale, flea market, or the dump? Would love to hear anything you have. Maybe I'll send out an email this morning. Not everyone goes on Facebook. And of course, a whole lot of folks just plain aren't interested in sharing. Sigh....
My new cellphone got a glitch last week so I was without a phone for a couple of days. Drove me nuts! So happy it's back. I'm enjoying the little bugger too! Especially when I can talk to it and say "OK Google, what does this mean?" Never fails to amaze me the technology we have today.
