I've been busy all day but am taking a few more rests in between. My body is insisting on it. Found a shoebox full of postcards and decided to go through them and see what I wanted to keep. Some of the messages were hilarious and/or corny (like the ones I sent out). Will share some of those below.
I especially liked seeing the really old ones. I have one from 1909 that I bought at a second hand store. It was from a guy in Seattle named John L. Siers addressed to Joseph Framme of Carrollton, KY. I looked them both up on ancestry.com (cause it's what I do) and while I couldn't find Siers, I did find Joseph, who was a farmer, and the message sounded like John Siers was in the insurance game.
Postcards I kept because of the picture was The World Trade Center marked 1973-2001, a picture of Standard Insurance Co in Portland where Mary Gaboury and I worked, All View Motel of Port Angeles where Sharon Sofie, Ruth Kvinsland, and I lived (until we were asked to leave), one of Portland, Oregon in the 1950s, two of Hurricane Ridge in the 50s, one of Walt's Restaurant in Centralis (where John and I stopped after we were married), and one of downtown San Diego, which also kind of looks like the 50s. I also kept a fold-up packet one of various Olympic Peninsula photos. I may scan them in later to share.
Ones I kept for their message included these:
I can't read the date but I'm pretty sure it was the 60's. I apparently felt like sending myself one when I was in San Francisco. It was mailed to my house in San Pablo, and it's an indication of just how cornbally I have always been. I wrote: Every Redskin Boy is on the Beam. Signed WAWA
Another that I sent to Linda Pedersen which looks kind of like 2015 read: We're going back to the boardwalk tomorrow. The Atlantic Ocean is so pretty. People here aren't that great on manners all the time, though. They honk if you don't move fast enough to please them.
Another I sent her in 1989 read: Hi! Conway Twitty and Merle Haggard are at Bally's. Ran into both of them while casino hopping and they asked us to party with 'em. They're so much fun but Merle wouldn't keep his hands to himself.
A huge amount of my postcards are from Mary. She's traveled the states and the world and I especially got a kick out of one she said from Japan. The picture was of various foods in a restaurant. She wrote: Here's a sample of the food I've been eating. Good thing I found McDonalds. ha ha
Two that Bob Blaurock sent to me and Linda at the mill (he was supervisor of the watchmen then and close to our office so we kind of hung out as we had our cigarette breaks.) The first one from Germany said:
I'm having a terrible time. I miss work so much. We went to this awful place yesterday. Damn! There's nothing to do here but interesting stuff and have fun. I'll tell you all about the rotten time I'm having when I get back.
The second from Hawaii must have been when he worked a cruise ship. He wrote:
Aloha! It's a dirty job but someone has to do it. Actually I'm working 7 days a week so I don't have that much time to myself. Wed & Thurs are my easy days so I can get away on Maui for some time of my own. Its a whole different ballgame out here. Kind of like Peyton Place what with the crew jammed together for weeks on end. Most of them are Joe's age so the hormones are flying. I've managed to just sit back and observe. Yes, I'm being a good boy. My wife is coming out next month for a week. Thank God. Meanwhile I'm concentrating on all the music I have to learn which is considerable. We do about ten shows per week plus several dance sets and a few deck sets. I must admit it beats punching key clocks. See you in January. Say hi to everyone.
The rest of the postcards are smaller in size are from the 60s. I was pleased to see them because they were addressed to places I lived in Portland and I couldn't recall the apt. numbers. I think the one from my dad is the only one I have from him. He wrote:
Dana says thanks for the P.C. (I don't know what that is) and I want to thank you for the record. Come on home and I'll take you back as far as Olympia, If the weatherman is right, we should have good weather for the rest of the week. Love Dad
The next five were all from Dana and addressed to three different places I lived in Portland, OR.
He wrote: Today the 22nd we're in Bellingham. Tomorrow we're heading for Idaho. I think we'll end up in Portand. Daddy's on a two-week vacation. Next week we're going to the World's Fair.

Hope you like card. Remember when we went to the ocean? This is where we were, only farther away.
Also:
We made it home. Boy, was Rebel happy. He told me to say hello so hello. (Our dog). We got your picture. When Linda got Dr. Kildare, boy did she flip.
Also:
5-4-63--What 'ya been doing? Besides moving. Next time you come home bring your First Family album. Have you heard any of the second album?
Also:
The 4th we went to Hurricane Ridge, then the 5th, 6th, 7th we were at Sol Duc. So far I've seen a stock car race, a motorcycle race, and a boat race but that wasn't much. My writing's terrible but I don't care.
Well, I just found a large album that holds postcards from all the states. Time to take them out and investigate. And I just HAD TO HAVE A POSTCARD FROM EVERY STATE IN THE UNION. Oh well, I know I'm not the first person to ever downsize and dismay at what they have collected all their life and now realize it's just more shit! ha ha
Wayne just left from cutting my front and backyard since he won't be here later as they're going to AZ to Hunter's graduation. Sammy comes here Tuesday.
I'm going to work finish work on the postcards and tomorrow I will see about getting my material bins thinned down to a respectable level. Need to put the word out to have folks come and take what they can use. I'm glad I've got a lot of stuff already sitting in the garage so I can sit at go at it at a leisurely pace.
