What did you do for fun as a child?
Lorraine: I went to the beach. We took a street car to Alki
Point.
John: Played with neighbor kids. Baseball, football,
swimming at the beach.
Marcella: I went to the roller-skating rink and was
thrilled when I got white roller skate shoes.
Arlie: Made models. After moving to town from Hastings, I
had friends to play with. We mostly made up our fun.
Denny: I read a lot. Lots of books about the sea.
Fantasized about being on ships as crew, wipers, oilers, captains, etc from the
Howard Pease books. Read most all of the Hardy Boys mystery books. Played some
sports, although later decided most were boring. Loved bicycles. Bought my own
brand new bicycle from my paper route money. An English bike. Used to dream of
ways to put an engine on one. Eventually at age 16 or 17, I bought a whizzer
motorbike and buzzed all over town. At 17, I bought a BSA motorcycle and got
kicked out of the house. Lived with Dick Freitas but mom came over and said I
was either coming home or going to Fort Worden. Either way, no motorcycle. I
got the picture and got rid of the motorcycle.
Joyce: I played with
dolls, sewed clothes for dolls, gave dolls a bath. Tinkertoys, roller skates,
baseball, bike riding, hop scotch, jump rope, jacks, and marbles. I can
remember playing ferryboat with the neighbor kids. Our trikes were the cars and
we had to stay in line on the sidewalk.
I also loved paper dolls.
Dale: Swam, bicycled, sand-lot sports, toy electric trains.
Janie: Built treehouses with Les and Dana
Jimmy: Got my first car at 15. Lost my license at 16 for
illegal possession. Went to jail for a night. I loved to drink and chase girls.
Also loved working on my old cars. Had some nice ones….to me anyway. Probably
junkers to most.
Sue S: I had a pogo stick that I tried to jump on until I
reached 100. I loved to roller skate. I also loved Barbie and had Ken, Midge,
and Skipper. I would make up little fashion shows with them and get family
members to watch.
Lill: Went to the local park, played hide and seek with neighbor
kids, participated in 4H, and played with my cat, Threads, when I was nine.
Marlee: Cindy and I played on the beach a lot. We had a
treehouse in a big old maple tree that we played house in. There was a rope
swing with an innertube attached too. Long walks on the beach looking for
seashells and pieces of glass that were all roughed up from the sand…and rocks.
I liked to roller skate on the front patio with a broom to keep my balance.
Cindy and I liked to take a bath together and play with the empty bubble bath
character bottles. I think they called them Soakies. When I was a little older,
I loved to watch Dark Shadows on tv in the afternoon. Mom would watch it with
me because I was too scared to watch it alone.
Cindy: Oh my! PLAYED!
I had so much fun growing up on Pt. Richmond near Gig Harbor. I had a
whole beach as my front yard. We had a huge maple tree with a treehouse. Two
stories. I loved horse statues and collected them. I’d spend hours making
corrals for them on the beach. Barbies were a big thing for me too.
Bill: I played with kids in the neighborhood. We played
baseball. I loved playing Little League ball although I wasn’t very good.
Bonnie: My girlfriends and I used to play dress-up. When we
were a little older, we used to build forts out in the woods and go camping.
Sue W: Played with lego, chicken eggs, rode bike, went to
beach, tried to draw. Liked anything that wasn’t a chore.
Mary: Rode bikes. Played outside. Hide and go seek, Red
Rover, Olympics. Watched tv.
Joe: Rode bikes. We always had bikes
Tiffany: Janelle and I used to go roller skating in the
garage and make up routines pretending we were on Dance Fever. We went to
Skateland and Skate Palace.
