Losing things to thieves is commonplace in this country. And because of drugs, I think the problem has gotten worse. You can't leave your car unlocked; doors and windows of your home need to be secure; in the supermarket you have to always be alert to where you leave your purse and even when you lock your car, you take the change of break-ins if thieves spot something they think they need. And of course, we all know about stolen identities. Unheard of when I was a kid but then the world is a different place now.
Because Jenni and Wayne's house sold quickly, they needed to make quick arrangements to relocate into a rental until their mobile home and property is ready. Might take a few months yet as there are so many hoops to jump through. They rented a little house across town but that left the need for another place to store "stuff" including a lot of Hunter's car tools and equipment. They had a very large garage/shop at their house and opted to use the old house on the new property for a temporary holding place. The house was Wayne's dad's place and it still had a lot of furniture and possessions inside. He had moved in with his partner years ago and the house was pretty much abandoned although it was kept locked.\
Wayne's sister and her husband live in a house within view of their dad's place so any activity would would most likely be noticed. Once they relocated to the rental, Wayne and Hunter proceeded to empty out the large shop and store things in his dad's house. The intention has always been that once their mobile is occupied, the old house will become Hunter's garage and shop.
Well, somebody must have got wind or noticed the things being transferred because thieves broke in right after they were done and stole just about all of Hunter's possessions. We're all heartbroken as he's saved and worked steadily to accumulate all that equipment.
The police came and took a report. Hunter is very attentive to details. Always has been. Once Jen contacted their insurance broker and discovered that the loss will probably be covered, Hunter proceeded to make a list of what he knew was missing. He has always done a lot of buying and selling on ebay and Craig's List so he had pictures on his cellphone of everything. When the cop saw his list, he looked at Hunter and said: "This is great! How old ARE you anyhow?" ha ha
Because they were worried the scumbags might return for more, they opted to remove a lot of what was left. Storage units on the west side aren't available so they rented a Uhaul truck temporarily. I suggested they use my garage as it would make a dandy storage unit and it'd be free. Don't know yet if they're taking me up on it.
Jenni's friend, Brett, who is very techy smart, gave Hunter this "thing" that attaches to the doorknob and if it's turned, a very loud SCREECH ALARM goes off. He also lent him a motion camera that will record any illegal activity. It was a sad day all around but they intend to secure the house a little better now.
Sammy goes to the vet this afternoon. He needs a shot and his toenail repaired. Poor guy.
I've been working on things to take to the potluck picnic we're going to on Sunday on Marrowstone Island. Looking forward to my half-sister and her husband arriving tomorrow from NC. We've never met so it ought to be interesting. She's head of an ER and ICU in a hospital down there. Sure hope the weather cooperates. The wind continues to hang around. Either way, though, we'll deal with it. I intend to take them into Port Townsend on Sunday to sightsee here and there.
Well, back to my kitchen work. I baked a pan of brownies and fixed a pan of krispie treats and then stored them away in containers so I wouldn't be tempted to sample them. I also made this yummy cold rice salad with shrimp and now I'm making Chinese coleslaw with top raman noodles, almonds, green onions and spices. Had to make a trip to Safeway for Worcestershire sauce this morning as I overlooked the fact I didn't have any. Man, that stuff is expensive!
Think I'm going to weed my flower pots on the deck today or tomorrow morning. Need to repot my Christmas cactus too after seeing Ann Marie's on Facebook. I used to have over a dozen houseplants but these days I only have a couple.
Mary's in Miami on business for a few days or at least she will be soon.
