Blogger (like Facebook) apparently doesn't have enough to occupy themselves so they've decided to change things and too bad if you don't like it! Am very tempted to start looking around for another place to blog anyway. I worked for over an hour trying to get the blog title to appear. Finally gave up. I took a break to go back to the DMV website again (no luck yesterday) to try and renew my license. I'm so fed up! Today I saw you could become a member online so I checked my password lists to see if maybe I had done that when I ordered tabs. And yes, there I was...a member. So I started to sign in and guess who didn't recognize my user name or password. No matter how many times I tried to get a new password, it wasn't working. So not happy. I'm fine with doing things on the computer. Prefer it really but doggone...you people need to step up and fix things at your end!
Blogger doesn't seem to have a "save" option now so I'm going to quit here, see if it stays saved, and then come back and finish.
Well, at least that works. I just tried the DMV again and NOTHING! I think I'll try at 2 a.m. or whenever I get up to pee and see if it's working then.
I haven't really managed to get much accomplished today. I did finish a jigsaw puzzle that was missing a piece so that was fulfilling.
I'm going to set up a new one tomorrow that I picked up in the activity room downstairs. Looks fun and it's onlyu 500 pcs. I prefer those.
At some point I'll pull out a few rocks to paint again. I've got quite a few in the back of my car but want to make some Santa faces for Xmas gifts.
I'm also cutting out squares for a new quilt. Wanted something easy peezy as I'm working at the table here in the living room while watching tv and didn't want to spend any brain energy on complicated patterns. Mainly, I'm wanting to thin down my material supply. It's already getting down there as I've got maybe half a bin left. With the scraps I accumulate from these cuttings, I'm throwing them into a bag for another crumb quilt production. Probaby bags as they seemed to be pretty popular.
TV has been more enjoyable for me as I ordered HBO for a month or two. Some terrific movies and series shows. True Dectective (you can look up on IMDB) was especially good. I also watched 'Harriet' about Harriet Tubman who helped slaves escape. I usually shy away from those shows on slaves as they upset me too much. Roots, however, will always be one of my all time favorites ever!
Last night I watched 'In the Valley of Violence' with Ethan Hawke and John Travolta. I didn't think I would like it (western where the bad guys are really bad) but it surprised me and I watched till the end. I watched the first season of Big Little Lies with Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and Laura Dern and it was terrific. As I got into season 3, however, I'm not liking it. Mainly because Meryl Streep (who I generally love in everything she does) is playing a nasty mother-in-law and she's totally annoying me.
Tomorrow a friend is coming by to return two books I lent her (Kris Logue) and Thursday I'm taking a neighbor to Eccho to return a walker and riser toilet. Isn't that exciting? I think Mary G and I need to go on another car ride. Am thinking I'd like to go out to Port Ludlow and see Joanne Gilles and Alice Hansen.
I go down to my sister, Janie's most mornings -at least for a little while. She's doing much better now after her gallbladder surgery but it's going to be a long haul. She's changing her diet and that's a good thing. Speaking of which, I'm back to fasting one day a week. I pick the day I'm not all fond of what's being served for dinner. This week is Friday's spaghetti. Last time it wasn't anything to write home about.
I've got two book sitting by my recliner waiting for me to get in a reading mode again. Not sure why I haven't been. I guess because they put me to sleep. I'm not giving up, though. Next on my list is The Trail to Ogallala by Ben Capps and The Group by Mary McCarthy.
I think I'll head downstairs and go for a walk. Been wanting to try out using two walking sticks instead of my walker to see how I do. Need to check and see if the mail has come and put my rent in the rent box too. Ugh! That pretty much brings my checkbook down to "better watch your pennies" mode.
Saw a picture on FB this morning of my cousin Cindy's grandkids who are starting kindergarten. Another reminder that time flies. Pearl & Jon are so cute.
What is something horrifying you found at a gift shop?
Many years ago I found a doll at a thrift store and saw that
it took batteries, so I bought it for $5, popped in some batteries and her eyes
and mouth started moving and she started talking. no string, no prompting, it
just talked. This doll was creepy as hell for a number of reasons. First off,
it said things and was made to respond to you like you were having a
conversation. Also, just when I thought it had gone through everything that it
could say, it would say something new. The other really creepy thing was that
once I was fooling around and I covered its eyes and it said, “It’s dark
outside”. I’m not kidding, they had sensors in the eyes. I looked it up and
found out that it was called the talking “Julie” doll. It was put out by Worlds
of Wonder”. They are the same people that made the talking “Teddy Ruxpin”bear
doll. I also found out that it was discontinued pretty quickly after it went on
the market. I assume parents were not to keen on this doll being around their
kids. You were also able to buy tapes that extended its already extensive
vocabulary, but I was only ever able to purchase one of those. Has anyone else
had one of these “Julie” dolls? As a big fan of the Twilight Zone, I realized
that someone had actually made a Talky Tina doll.
What actors & actresses are hard to direct?
Shirley MacLaine - Basically destroyed her career and legacy
by being extremely unpleasant and difficult to work with, Recently watched Two
Mules for Sister Sarah, which should have been the first in a series of pairing
between MacLaine and Eastwood , who played off one another quite well. However,
according to Eastwood and the film’s director Don Siegel, MacLaine was so
difficult to work with on the set that they both swore never to do so again.
And they didn’t, which did nothing to assist her career.
Debra Winger - Very difficult and strung out on cocaine for
many years. Should have had a career comparable to Meryl Streep or at least
Diane Keaton. Now is barely a footnote in the annals of film.
Val Kilmer - Had a promising career that he decided to flush
down the toilet. Rather than realizing that he was never going to be a big box
office draw and deciding to pace himself and his temperament, Kilmer acted like
a d*ck until his box failures and weight gain due to illness reduced him from
being a leading actor to being an occasional character one. Should have had a
career similar to Robert Downey Jr. , without the drugs. He didn’t.
Katherine Heigl - Basically a two-fer in that she ruined
both her television and her film careers. Went from a potentially popular
rom-com leading actress, to someone who no one would cast on a dare. Went back
to television and found that she had burned too many bridges. While she’s never
been a great actress, she is certainly an attractive one. Too bad that didn’t
mean that she was easy to direct. Or likable.
William Shatner - Despite being in television and film for
more than sixty years, you’d be hard pressed to find anybody with anything good
to say about him. He acts like a diva…which is odd as he’s an 80+ year old
man….
What are the things people in their 70s don’t tell you about being 70?
There’s probably things that have been said over and over but, no one listens. My dad is 82. He gives me a blow by blow and I observe.. One thing is that the way you eat and live has a much more dramatic affect on quality of life issues. If you eat junk you will definitely have issues. You might have issues anyway but, if you’re living on a steady diet of ice cream life’s going to be rough. The bad living you may have done up to that point will likely have a major impact.
There are quite a few “little old people”. But, there are extremely few big old people. As you age keeping your weight in check matters. It will hurt but, exercise anyway. My dad goes to the gym a few days a week. He says that he gets sore but, it’s ever worse if he doesn’t go. Get use to aches and pains. Make plants the center of your meals. You darn sure need the fiber.
As a very general rule, a majority of people over 70 are more polite. They have stopped fighting ego battles that never were going to go anywhere..they've figured that out. The biggest thing, people over 70 are just like everyone else. They don’t stop being normal people with normal thoughts and feelings just because they aren’t young anymore. We should treat them a lot better than we do.
Has an actor ever been embarrassed by their role in a film?
Me I was in a Charlie Bronson movie years ago in a bit role
as a barroom brawler. I trained my ass off in the gym l was in the best shape
of my life. We choreographed the fight scene for me to knock out a couple of
cut throats and finally get dropped by my hero Bronson. The movie was a success
and my family couldn’t have been prouder that I was in the movies. When we
watched it on opening night at the local theater my scene had been chopped to
pieces on the cutting room floor. Through move magic I had 5 seconds of screen
time where the barmaid knocked me out with one punch. The scene of me beating
guys up was re shot with a bigger better looking actor who got to fight
Bronson. My family thought I was full of shit and were embarrassed because all
my relatives were told about the movie. They all had a good laugh
