This is my second post this morning but I had to rant a bit. Just got a letter from my half sister (in jail). I feel so bad for her. Her knee has been hurting for a long time and I can sure identify with that aging problem. She told me it cost her $5 to go to sick call. She said they didn't even look at it and she couldn't get her pant leg rolled up high enough. They're not allowed to wear shorts or pull their pants down. Told her to come back again (and pay another $5 for nothing). I guess some of those stories about people getting medical aid in prison doesn't ring true. At least in some places.
She also told me she's trying to teach herself to knit and is working on a baby sweater. Said she doesn't know anyone with a baby but they have a kids' program there where you can try to sell your article in the visiting room. She went to sign up for the "create for kids program" and was told you have to be a prisoner for ten years and then get on a 3-year waiting list. She knew there were women on that program who have not been in jail for ten years and says "lying" is commonplace.
Some people (probably most) would say prison is prison. What do you expect? But I don't totally agree. Yes, it is prison and people there have to pay the price but not getting medical help and not being encouraged to create seems like a complete waste of taxpayer money. But then, that's what we do in this country -- waste taxpayer's money.
There. I got that off my chest!
