The timing was just plain spot on. Two apartments opened up recently at Discovery View in Port Townsend and the manager was scrambling to get them rented as soon as she could. Decided to have an open house TODAY to encourage people to come look. I had been in email and phone contact with her and she encouraged me to drive in and start the paperwork. You can believe I didn't think twice about that. I was so excited but didn't want to get my hopes up too much as I really really wanted to live there but I didn't even know if there was a wait list.
Anyhow, I took Jenni with me and we drove into their parking lot around 11:45. TWO HOURS LATER....we were done. So much paperwork. Now I await all the background checks on my character, the validity of my finances, and then I can be told one way or the other if the place is definitely mine. You have to go through this paperwork every single year to get recertified. But I'm fine with that.
I didn't qualify for two bedrooms so I'll be doing more downsizing once I establish what will fit and what I can truly live without. Thankfully, I can store at Jenni and Wayne's until I'm ready to let go of it all. I took some pictures of one of the empty apartments but it won't necessarily be the one I'll get. I used some of their website pics here as they're better shots than what I took with my phone.
I don't know my final rent payment yet as they have to tweak the numbers taking into account what I pay for medical expenses. Should be around $1000 give or take and that's fine with me as it covers all utilities including electric and cable. They also have bi-weekly housekeeping, two laundry rooms on each floor, a tv lounge, a library, an activity room, and a dining room --where you get breakfast and dinner. Their van also makes trips to Walmart in Sequim and other places. The bathrooms have walk-in showers or cut-away tubs for stepping in and they're hoping to get a beauty shop going eventually. The entire building inside will be painted in May and all new carpeting in the halls.
I think it's so ironic that I'm ending up in the same place where my dad and Marcella lived. I'm hoping I can figure out what room they had when they first moved in (before they got their two-bedroom apt) as that will be even more special if I end up with THEIR room. I'm so thankful I checked on my status at Highland Commons on Monday or I'd still be sitting here waiting for that phone call to say there was an opening. As it was, she told me on Monday that I was 64th on the list and could expect a 4-5 year wait! Not what she told me last July when I signed up so I decided right then and there it was time to look elsewhere.
Below are some of the pictures I took and from their website. You can see more if you Google Discovery View Retirement.
This is what the apt. looked like that I visited today. It's a one bedroom and that door right there to the left of the front door is a coat closet.
These two shelves are in a walk in closet just off the bathroom.
